Grand Dad was a Rolling Stone

My granddad on my Ma's side only had one arm. He drank a lot and as far as I could tell he wasn't much interested in the ways of the Lord.

The Midnight Caller

A small screech owl, I assume to be the Eastern species, has been monitoring my bird feeder after dark as of late. I suppose he is watching for mice or other small animals that visit the ground near the feeder looking for seeds and nuts that the birds have scattered about. He doesn't seem to be too bothered by my presence but I still try to give him his space. The only problem I have with this arrangement is that one of my dogs is a Chihuahua and she usually wakes me up at least once a night, sometimes more often, to go outside to perform her necessaries. I don't think the owl is big enough to take on even a small dog, but I still feel obliged to go out in my slippers and my robe in the middle of the night and stare up into the trees to see if I can distinguish his, or her, silhouette against the blackness of the night sky. I don't want any awkward situations to arise. It's not so bad though, in fact, I've come to realize that I rather enjoy these quiet moments each night when the owl and I watch each other from a distance and contemplate each others place in the world. Good hunting my feathered friend.
